Lessons Learned from Atomic Oxygen Interaction with Spacecraft Materials in Low Earth Orbit There have been five Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) passive experiment carriers (PECs) (MISSE ) to date that have been launched, exposed in space on the exterior of International Space Station (ISS) and than returned to Earth for analysis.   NASA and the regulatory agencies overseeing NASA’s groundwater cleanup project at JPL have approved and signed a final Record of Decision (ROD) for the cleanup. Community outreach and public involvement are integral components of the groundwater cleanup project at and near NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). after an evaluation.

The third Effects of Oxygen Atom Interaction with Materials (EOIM 3) experiment flew on STS from July 31 to August 8, The EOIM-3 sample tray was exposed to the low-earth orbit space environment for hours at an altitude of nautical miles resulting in a calculated total atomic. NASA has begun a new approach to human factors design standards. For years NASA-STD, Manned Systems Integration Standards, has been a source of human factors design guidance for space systems. In order to better meet the needs of the system developers, NASA is revising its human factors standards system.

The degradation of two epoxy composites, in three laminates, following exposure to atomic oxygen, was studied. • Samples were exposed to a total fluence of × 10 20 atom/cm 2, equating to 43 days in low Earth orbit.. The flexural rigidity and modulus of all laminates displayed a reduction of 5–10% after first exposure (equivalent to 20 days in orbit). Banks, B. A., De Groh, K. K., Miller, S. K., and Waters, D. Abstract. We report here on two new polymer materials called TOR (Triton Oxygen Resistant) and COR (Clear Oxygen Resistant) that are highly AO-VUV (atomic oxygen-vacuum ultraviolet) resistant for use in space, while maintaining strength and thermal control properties (α, ε and α/ε).
